The Pancretan Association of America Fraternity of Detroit "Pseloretes," the Cretan Ladies Society "Kriti," and the "Levendoyenna" Youth of Detroit invite you to commemorate two significant events in Cretan history on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 10:00 AM:
- The Heroes of the Holocaust of Arkadi (November 8, 1866)
- The 200th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the Four New Martyrs of Rethymno (October 28, 1824)
We will also honor the memory of all deceased past members of our community. If you would like to include the names of your family members who have passed, please send a list to
Brief History:
The Four New Martyrs of Rethymno — Aggelis, Manouil, Georgios, and Nikolaos — were farmers and married men with children who lived as Crypto-Christians, outwardly adopting Turkish identity while secretly remaining faithful to the Orthodox Church. During the Greek War of Independence (1821–1824), they were captured and beheaded on October 28, 1824, for their resistance to Ottoman rule. They were buried at the Monastery of Saint Constantine, Arkadi.
The Holocaust of Arkadi (November 1866) occurred during the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule. The Arkadi Monastery, serving as the rebel headquarters, was besieged by a large Ottoman force. Over 700 women and children, along with 259 defenders, took refuge there. When the Ottomans broke through, rebel Kostis Giaboudakis ignited the monastery's gunpowder storage, resulting in the death of most inside. This act of resistance shocked Europe and North America, further undermining Ottoman legitimacy.

Asia Minor, also referred to as Anatolia, is a region in which the Greeks have lived and advanced their culture, religion, politics, art and ideas since the second millennium BCE. However, today, this area is often overlooked as an important place of Hellenic heritage and history.
This presentation will be a brief retrospective on the important stages of Hellenism in Asia Minor, with main emphasis on the uprooting of the Anatolian Greeks from that area after the catastrophe of 1922 and its disastrous aftermath.

On behalf of the Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade Committee, it is with great joy to announce the date for the next, the 14th Annual Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade, which will once again be held on Monroe Street in Historic Greektown! The parade date will be on, Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.
If you need a healthy dose of all things Greek, please make sure you markdown this date on your calendars! “Having this parade is a way to have fun and to preserve and further the very proud Hellenic heritage.” George Reganis, a founding member and the Chairman of the Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade.
Preparations are also in the works for having a very special pre-parade evening event on Saturday, April 18, 2015. This evening event will include a youth poem recital about the Greek Independence, Greek music, dancing and the honoring of the 2015 Hellenic Heritage Award Winners.
Once again, the Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade Weekend will have the philanthropic side of supporting and raising funds for the Hellenic Museum of Michigan (www.hellenicmi.org).
Finally, Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade Committee needs the support and help from the Greek community to make the 2015 Detroit Greek Independence Day Parade very special! If your organization, church or club would like to enter a float or vehicle and/or if you would like to help volunteer your time over the weekend, please feel free to notify the committee at:

Join us for an inspirational event on November 13th 2011, where the Detroit Cretans commemerate those who sacrificed their lives for their ancestors. The event will start off at St John's Greek Orthodox Church, during normal church services. Following the church service, we will also sponsor coffee hour after service. Members are requested to also attend church service at St John's of Sterling Heights, MI on this day.
FYI:This event caused strong reactions among the liberal circles of western Europe, the "Holocaust of Arkadi". The event occurred in November 1866, as a large Ottoman force besieged the Arkadi Monastery, which served as the headquarters of the rebellion. In addition to its 259 defenders, over 700 women and children had taken refuge in the monastery. After a few days of hard fighting, the Ottomans broke into the monastery. At that point, the abbot of the monastery set fire to the gunpowder stored in the monastery's vaults, causing the death of most of the rebels and the women and children sheltered there. As reported by the American writer and consul William Stillman and others over the recently introduced telegraph, this event caused enormous shock in the rest of Europe and in North America and decreased the perceived legitimacy of Turkish rule.
